The navy blue portion of the lining, including the sleeves, is a replacement and is done superbly. The center seam of the collar has come unsewn, not a major issue. All edges are trimmed with navy twill tape. The sleeve cuffs are each decorated with 3 smaller buttons and the twill.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe skirt is unlined and fastens at the left side with 4 hooks and eyes, all present. The waist is reinforced with a cotton band and the hem is finished with 1 ½” black velvet. Matching buttons decorate the lower side seams of the skirt. My opinion is that many, if not all, of the buttons are replacements.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is an exceptional antique walking suit, very sturdy and sympathetically preserved making it very wearable. Both pieces of this antique dress fit my size 6 dress form (34-24-35) tightly – like a glove. The fabric is still crisp (sizing?) – this frock may never have been worn and I doubt it has ever been washed. It features a delightfully full skirt that will make you feel so fabulous and feminine! The vintage dress is unlined cotton calico. It has a squared scoop neckline that ties with self-fabric strings at center front. The short sleeves are delightfully poufy – gathered at the shoulder seam pleated down to fit closely to the arm at the cuff. The closure is with a 28” metal zipper at center front and there is a self-fabric belt that ties. The attached skirt is wonderfully full – bias cut – and flows beautifully.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe label reads “Modely” and there is a size tag. DO NOT USE THIS SIZE WHEN PURCHASING! There is a period numerical notation of some sort written, probably in pencil, on the waistband and the buckle has a patent date that is stamped so that it is mostly off the metal, and therefore unreadable. All tapes are present and intact and in really very, very good condition. All the steel hoops are present and unbroken. They have, of course, rusted and the rust color comes through the cotton covering on them. We strongly recommend placing a petticoat between old cages and an antique dress (preferably one newly made from 100% white cotton!) Made from chocolate brown silk faille, the dress is made up of a bodice, a bustled overskirt, and draped skirt. The very tailored bodice, with pleated peplum to cover the bustle, reflects the 1880s change to the shoulder seam placement at the natural shoulder line. It closes up the front with 21 glass buttons – beautiful in themselves, with almost a copper iridescence – 3 of these are missing. The band collar shows pin marks where a brooch was worn at the base of the throat. Fully lined, the seams are hand overcast. Underarm protectors remain in place and, I believe, are only age darkened. There is a water mark at center back, on the lining only, about the size of a quarter and the tape to hang the bodice remains at the back of the neck. The overskirt panel is pleated and forms a sort of “bow” or “butterfly” effect, very puffy! The waist band\/tie has also been replaced on this piece, but has been done very conscientiously as the brown tape that was used to hang the overskirt was reused on the band. (We were not the conservator of this piece, but kudos to whomever did the work!) The skirt has an attached asymmetrical drape, formed by a wide box pleat at center front and then pleated and attached at the right side seam. Knife pleats from the left of center front then blend flawlessly with the skirt’s own knife pleats to the back closure. The waistband has been replaced, but it would appear that the large period hook and eye were retained and are used to complete the waist closure. The hemline is decorated with inverted box pleats. The skirt is fully lined in brown cotton with a 1 3\/8” self-fabric, turned hem that is bound with wool hem tape. There is also a 5” black linen hem protector. A single tape is sewn at the back for use in forming the bustle effect. There is a pocket at the left front, in a seam and under the draping. The condition of all three pieces is impeccable! The fabric is very strong with a very few lighter areas - so minimal that they are difficult to find and photograph. The replacement of the waistbands has been done perfectly and only adds to the exceptional condition of this unbelievable dress. Approximate measurements are given for reference only as a garment of this age should never be worn. All layers are sewn together at the dropped waistline, which helps to hold the weight of the glass beading. The dress is sleeveless with scoop neckline. There is a scarf-like piece of lace attached at the top of the left shoulder. I believe I’ve arranged the lace on the shoulders incorrectly – they do appear to possibly be sort of a cap, but I’m starting to think they are really meant to be tucked in like a facing the way it is done at the center back neckline.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt the dropped waist is a twisted band of black satin ribbon and a rosette bow medallion is placed at the left hip.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eLabel:  \u003c\/strong\u003eNone\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCondition:\u003c\/strong\u003e   Very good. The beading is in very good condition. The black beads on the black ground tends to hide any missing beads. One photo shows the area with the most bead loss, which is on the lower front. The lace has a few ravels and breaks, but no glaring tears. The netted full length under dress does have several significant tears, most notably the netted lace layer behind the beaded panel on the front. It is on a drawstring and is shown very clearly in the photo that shows the side front snap closure. This layer is not necessary to the structure or for modesty and could be unsnapped and displayed so it would not show.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePhotographing black is a little tricky. Some photos have been lightened in order to show detail – the dress is very black. There is very minor bead loss on the silk crepe overdress, mainly a couple at the neckline. There is a small hole in the front, at the bustline and a very nearly invisible horizontal line at the level of the side medallions that shows from where the dress went through a period alteration (see blog). The coloration keeps these from being particularly obvious. The underdress shows some marring at the hemline in the front, which is barely visible through the overdress, especially given the location. There is a silk ribbon drawstring at the top allowing the wearer to adjust the fit for modesty. It is fragile and should probably not be pulled.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe underdress shows the most evidence of period alterations (all removed) where tucks were taken at the underarm area and the straps were shortened – one was cut and moved, but it seems to have been an improvement! Only the center front portion of the bodice is made of the fashion fabric. The yoke is then formed by gathering the top of long panels and attaching them, horizontally, at the upper bust level. The yoke portion of the bodice shows the upper two hexagonal shaped abalone shell buttons. The remaining 5 buttons are unseen (covered by the yoke panels) on the fashion fabric of the bodice and therefore, are functional but not necessarily “pretty”. The gathered panels drop loosely to the hemline and are sewn together at the center front slightly below the waistline. Large black snaps have been added to this area but are not original to the wrapper. The back of the wrapper has princess seams and at center back, there is a deep, inverted pleat where an additional panel of fabric is added on the interior, tacked to the waistband, to allow for a small bustle. The collar, cuffs, and separate tie belt are all made of the same fashion fabric.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe bishop sleeves are gathered neatly at the shoulder and the cuffs each fasten with a single hexagonal shaped abalone button. The interior bodice is not especially fitted. Not only would this be practical for the lady’s light morning chores, but it would serve nicely for maternity wear. There is minor discoloration on the lining only in the underarm area, otherwise there are no obvious stains or fading. There are no holes, but there are 3 “nips” on the edge of the left side collar. I’ve looked at them with a jeweler’s loupe and I’m not really sure what they are – possibly tiny holes with period repairs? There is something similar on the left front side at the waistline – this looks more like a line of catches.
