Dark Blue Velvet 2-Piece Edwardian 1915 Jacket & Skirt Suit - XS
This exquisite 2-piece rich, dark blue - almost black -velvet antique Edwardian walking suit dates to about 1915.
The blue velvet jacket has a shawl collar and an attached 2 ½” wide self-fabric belt. It buttons with 2 large buttons – abalone, I believe – and the belt fastens and is decorated with these same buttons. There are 2 patch pockets with flaps that are decorated with 2 buttons each, slightly smaller. The jacket is fully lined, retaining most of the original silk lining. The navy blue portion of the lining, including the sleeves, is a replacement and is done superbly. The center seam of the collar has come unsewn, not a major issue. All edges are trimmed with navy twill tape. The sleeve cuffs are each decorated with 3 smaller buttons and the twill.
The skirt is unlined and fastens at the left side with 4 hooks and eyes, all present. The waist is reinforced with a cotton band and the hem is finished with 1 ½” black velvet. Matching buttons decorate the lower side seams of the skirt. My opinion is that many, if not all, of the buttons are replacements.
This is an exceptional antique walking suit, very sturdy and sympathetically preserved making it very wearable. Both pieces of this antique dress fit my size 6 dress form (34-24-35) tightly – like a glove. I would not recommend this dress to be worn by anyone larger than a size 4 to allow for body movement.

Jacket: Bust: 38” Waist: 30” Hips: 32” Shoulders: 14” THESE MEASUREMENTS ARE TAKEN FROM THE OUTSIDE OF A LINED GARMENT. This means the wearable measurements are MUCH smaller – as in size 4 in modern terms. Skirt: Waist: 24” Hips: 34” Length: 37” If you have these exact measurements, you will not be able to sit down in this skirt!
