Crape Covered Mourning Hat - 1920
This fabulous mourning hat dates to about 1915-20. The hat is formed of buckram and completely covered on the outside with black crape fabric. The design features 3 folds of crape fabric around the hat and forms a bow on the side. It is lined with black silk with band of black velvet around the opening which acts as a sort of period "velcro" to help keep the hat in place upon the wearer's head.
Measurements: The inner circumference of the hat measures 23".
Condition: Very Good ++ Condition. The crape is in excellent condition. Outwardly, the only flaw is that there is a section of fabric that could be tacked down where the brim meets the crown. The fabric is just beautiful! Inside the crown, the black silk lining has shattered and the buckram form can be seen. The form is solid and shaped nicely.
A fabulous and fairly rare example of mourning millinery from the late Teens (1910s) to just pre-Roaring Twenties period!
