This is an exceptionally fine antique black wool jacket or waist (bodice) that dates to the late Victorian – early Edwardian era (1890-1905).

Fully lined, it features lovely braided trim that accents the black on black design elements such as the wide, round collar and the divided peplum. It also has the puffy “pouter pigeon” styling with very long coat sleeves with exaggerated elbows and turned up cuffs.

The closure is at center front with 9 metal hooks and eyes and there are 2 columns of fabric covered decorative buttons on each side of the center front.

Label:

This is an antique with no label.

Condition:

Excellent. One metal eye is missing. The lining has a couple of small tears near the bottom hooks (see photo). The jacket is very small in the shoulders. If you intend to wear this item, be very certain of your measurements as we do not accept returns of antique clothing.

How We Measure Garments

Measurements:

  • Bust – 33”
  • Waist – 25”
  • Shoulders – 13”
  • Shoulder to Waist – 13”
  • Sleeve Length – 18 ½” (Measurement aken from the BOTTOM of the armhole on the sleeve seam due to the shape of the sleeve. Sleeve length can vary due to the turned up cuff.)

For reference – the fit was good on my dress form with these measurements:

Bust – 33 ½” Waist – 24 ½” Hips – 35 ½”.

As noted above, the measurement across the back of the shoulder is only 13”. The dress form doesn’t have arms to move, the way you do! If you intend to wear this as outerwear, take into consideration that the measurements are taken on the outside of the garment and you will need extra room to accommodate the clothing you are wearing.

This is an antique garment, so we will not be able to accept a return.
