This is a circa 1860 antique Victorian drawn silk spoon bonnet.

It features shimmering steel gray drawn silk gathered over canes across the bonnet frame. The curtain is stabilized with black cotton netting and the wire frame is covered in buckram, edged with straw braid, and lined in the taffeta and period muslin.  Inside the brim, framing the face is beautiful black lace.

The silk ribbon ties are edged in black. This, along with the black lace, MAY signify a bonnet that was used in “second” or “complimentary” mourning.

Condition:  Fair.

There is some shattering of the silk taffeta at the back, at the front edge, and on the ties, quite typical of bonnets of this age, and a water-type stain on the inside (only) of the crown.

Otherwise this is a very sound bonnet, perfect for display with your Civil War era gowns.
