Titanic Era Hat Black Toque Edwardian
This is a superb antique black Edwardian toque hat and veil, circa 1910 - Titanic era (1912). It may have been used for mourning. Fashioned of woven or braided straw bands over a millinery wire form and lined with black silk. There is a wide black velvet ribbon that encircles the hat and forms a large, wired bow at the front. A black silk veil decorated with chenille balls is attached at the back with a straight pin that is, in my opinion, a mourning pin – dull black head and a blued steel pin). Of course, we have no way of knowing if this is original to the hat, but it is most certainly old and of the period.
Measurements:
Measurements are approximate, due to the nature of the style. It was meant to sit somewhat loosely on top of more than over the hair.
- Inner circumference: approximately 23”
- Height (not including bow): approximately 4”
- Diameter (across top): approximately 11 ½”
Condition: The condition of this elegant hat is excellent. I can find no flaws in the straw or ribbon and the silk lining has only a harmless, loose thread at the seam. The veil is fragile and it does have a few holes and small tears - please be sure to view all the photos.
